Post-doctoral position available to study the molecular mechanisms of cell-cell interactions in mammalian development and disease, using mouse as a model system. We focus on the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway which is critical for many aspects of embryonic development, and aberrant regulation of the pathway results in a wide variety of congenital defects and cancers.

The two main areas of research interest are: (1) The molecular characterization of the Hedgehog signaling pathway. We wish to understand how the lipidated Hh ligand generates a morphogen gradient and how the Hh signal is transduced in Hh-responsive cells; (2) The roles of Hedgehog signaling in postnatal physiology and homeostasis such as stem cell maintenance and cancer formation. We investigate regulation of neural and pulmonary stem cells by Hh signaling and how aberrant Hh signaling leads to brain tumors and lung cancers. In all of our studies, a combination of mouse genetics (transgenic and knockout mice), cell biology and biochemistry are employed.

Accelerated online degrees provide freedom to anyone interested in pursuing higher education. All with the barriers to pursuing a university education evaporate in the face of the internet. Any student with entry to a computer and the web can earn a post-secondary degree. This might have been an impossible dream for some only 15 years ago.

The percentage of Americans over 25 years old who hold college levels has risen to an all-time higher of 28%, according towards the U. S. Census Bureau. Going to college pays off financially. Holding a bachelor's degree increases a person's yearly earnings twofold in comparison to a person with a higher college diploma. A master's degree holder will make $1.three million more than an individual having a higher college diploma more than his or her entire career. Thanks to the internet, area and responsibilities no longer stand within the way of anyone who wants to pursue a university degree. Students who wish to finish university much more rapidly can do so by working on accelerated online degrees.

Most online bachelor's levels consider about 3-5 years to total. For students looking to speed up the procedure, accelerated online degrees could be finished in just two many years. To accomplish this demands getting classes year round. The student who decides to consider this route should be aware that it'll consider much more time and effort than completing a level in the regular 3-5 year time table. If a student has other obligations, he or she requirements to be realistic about regardless of whether or not an accelerated program would work well in his or her person circumstances.

You will find different factors that we all might have for trying to finish our level as soon as feasible. It's not about rushing through the encounter but instead we frequently require the diploma to obtain that new job or promotion we wanted. If we want to pursue an entirely new career or line of function we'll require the degree to prove we're capable enough to get hired.

o how do you go about selecting which on the internet level plan may be the correct a single for you? There are many various options, and also the greatest way to get started is by heading straight to the source and browsing the web sites or printed materials of any college you are thinking about enrolling with. You'll be capable to compare which degrees are offered in which schools, what their scheduling is like, regardless of whether or not they offer and accelerated course structure and also what their expenses are. Comparing all of this info you will be able to make a sound decision for your life, your personality and your profession.

Finally, the importance of this cannot be overstated, you should attend a college that offers a completely accredited level. Be sure to read the fine print and that you aren't missing a loophole somewhere that talks about how your school isn't accredited, either as a entire or for that specific plan you're entering into. Besides fundamental accreditation, many fields of study and career paths have stricter requirements for additional certification, and you usually want to make sure you're with a college that offers everything you need.

Thinking about making a difference in your career by going back to school for a bachelor's or master's degree? These days, colleges and universities are offering working people an option: accelerated degree programs.

Call local colleges and universities to find out if they offer any accelerated degree programs. You can also visit an online search engine and look up "accelerated degree programs," but finding one close to you may take a while.

Determine whether you can get the type of degree you need from a college or university near you. Some accelerated degree programs offer only bachelor's degrees or only master's degrees, but many do offer both.

Research the costs. Such a program typically costs $15,000 to $25,000 and may include books, a leased computer and tuition; keep in mind that you may not qualify for as much financial aid as you would have right out of high school.

Assess the time commitment. Whether you are going for a bachelor's or a master's degree, most programs require students to attend class one night per week and study group another, and these are not optional.

Find out if you meet the entrance requirements for the program. For bachelor's degree programs, you may be required to show proof of high school graduation or a GED, a minimum of 60 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and a minimum of two years of practical work experience. For a master's degree program you must have a bachelor's degree, letters of recommendation and a minimum of two years of practical work experience.

Gather your information before applying. You will usually need a letter from your employer to verify your years of work experience, copies of transcripts and diplomas from your high school and any previous college work, and in most cases, letters of recommendation.

Locate the accelerated degree program's office. Sometimes the registrar's office handles this program in addition to regular undergraduate and graduate programs; however, it's just as common for separate offices to be located off the college or university's main campus.

Submit your application with all appropriate materials and fees.

Tips & Warnings

Choose a degree that will most benefit your career. Most of these programs offer degrees in subjects like business administration, technology management and human relations; if you are a concert pianist, these are not likely to benefit you at all.

Make sure you are dedicated to finishing the program. If you change your mind, a refund may or may not be possible.

Commit yourself to attending class and study groups every week. Because these programs already meet on a limited basis, more than one or two absences can seriously jeopardize your ability to get the degree you're seeking.

Postdoc: Neuroimaging Studies of Cognitive Decline and Resilience, Dr. Susan Resnick

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is recruiting postdoctoral fellows with interest in cognitive and brain aging in the Laboratory of Personality and Cognition (LPC).

Since 1994, we have been performing serial structural and functional (PET-CBF) brain imaging studies of participants in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. More recently, these studies have included PET studies of amyloid deposition in vivo. Extensive databases of medical, neuropsychological, and imaging data are available to test novel hypotheses on predictors of cognitive decline in older adults and factors that may accelerate or protect against cognitive decline and impairment (e.g., genetic, hormonal, nutritional, medication use). In addition, resources are available for the development of novel projects using structural and functional MRI methods to investigate age differences in particular cognitive domains. Our program involves extensive collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University neuroscience and imaging communities and the image processing group of Dr. Christos Davatzikos of the University of Pennsylvania.

The successful candidate will have research interests in the related fields of psychology/neuroscience, experience with analysis of neuropsychological or neuroimaging data, and strong writing skills. Fellowship duration is typically 3-4 years. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D. in psychology/neuroscience with less than five years of postdoctoral research experience. The position is located in Baltimore, MD, a city with a stimulating scientific and cultural environment. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments (http://www.training.nih.gov/stipends.asp). Initial appointment is one to two years, with extension up to five years. Positions are open until filled.

To apply, click on the link below, or send curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, relevant publications, and contact information of three references to Susan Resnick, Ph.D., Acting Chief, Laboratory of Personality and Cognition at Susan.Resnick@nih.gov or mail to: Biomedical Research Center, 251 Bayview Blvd, Suite 100, Room 4B335, Baltimore, MD 21224-6825. Additional information regarding the NIA IRP and the LPC are available at the following web sites: http://www.grc.nia.nih.gov and http://www.grc.nia.nih.gov/branches/lpc/lpc.htm.

HHS and NIH are Equal Opportunity Employers

The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.

A ten years before, a Bachelors degree seemed to be the solution into a great job and also prospects to get deal or promotion. Nowadays, it is actually hardly sufficient for a newbie career at work. A number of firms, specifically professional IT companies, will still only employ Masters and also Doctoral qualification holders. In certain areas on the work, the employment sector has overloaded by foreign industry professionals having postgraduate degrees. One example is IT, where there are lots of Indian professionals with Masters degrees subsidised by their government. Although there are no federal government grants to subsidize postgraduate college education for US citizens, women, at least, have some scholarships available to them courtesy of several non-profit organizations.

These Masters and MBA awards for women tend to possess instead strict standards. Unlike two or 3 decades back, in the 80s and 90s, there is much less cash getting awarded now. These days, the gender gap in each the workforce and higher education has significantly narrowed, and is no lengthier observed to become socially destabilizing. This is why there are less charities for ladies in the US, and less of individuals remaining are nevertheless providing postgraduate scholarships.

However, it's actually easier to get a woman to get postgraduate college training these days. In the previous, should you did not want to study your Masters or MBA degree full-time, your only option was on-campus evening courses. This, of course, is really a severe problem for mothers who have to take care of their kids. But the excellent increase in on the internet college programs has transformed all that. The great flexibility offered signifies that any lady with kids can nevertheless discover time to suit in her studies. The higher public acceptance of online university degrees also means that a lot more businesses providing these MBA awards for ladies are also awarding their scholarships to ladies getting these on the internet levels.

Usually speaking, two different kinds of businesses award postgraduate scholarship grants for ladies. The first are women's charities. A single instance is the Philanthropic Educational Group. They have 3 main educational aid programs, a single of which is a scholarship program for ladies pursuing postgraduate education, and another is an option student mortgage plan (4% interest for $10,000).

The second kind of organization providing Masters/MBA awards for ladies are women-only expert associations and women's chapters of professional associations. Businesses like these perceive an imbalance within the number of males and ladies within their area of work, and test to get more ladies included. An instance of the are the Training Foundation For Ladies In Accounting and also the Computing Research Association's Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Investigation.

Of course, you will find also other parties not so easily classified, such as the Selected Professions Fellowships. This group provides scholarship grants to ladies studying postgraduate programs in fields dominated by males. As at 2010, they consider these to be Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science and Architecture. For minority ladies, they also provide scholarship grants for postgraduate levels in Law, Medicine and Company Administration.

Something that many potential postgraduate students overlook are government-subsidized student university financial loans such as the Perkins and Stafford loans. Such financial loans are often undertaken for undergraduate research, but have a tendency to be forgotten for postgraduate studies. Exactly like for a Bachelors level, a Perkins loan for a Masters degree is provided by the college along with a Stafford loan is offered by a private lender (e.g. a bank). Because these financial loans are subsidized and/or guaranteed by the federal government, the interest rate is lower than a commercial student loan and also the payment conditions will also be a lot more favorable.

Although the gender gap within the workplace has narrowed, women nevertheless have to work tougher and have much better qualifications than males to get ahead within their careers. With the postgraduate level and MBA grants for women accessible today, it creates sense to get a minimum of a Masters degree.

Check out the eligibility requirements: you must be a U.S. citizen with a bachelor's degree but not a doctorate, and you must be under 26 years of age when you accept the scholarship.

Contact your school's Churchill Foundation representative to obtain an application package. Be sure to find out from your campus rep when the deadline for application is; it usually falls around November 15th.

Make sure you have what it takes to be a Churchill Scholar.
Work with your faculty advisor and your campus representative to secure an official nomination from your institution.

Begin work on your application several months in advance of the November deadline. You need to have time to take the GRE and collect transcripts and other materials.

Remember to have your GRE results sent directly to the Churchill Foundation. The Foundation's GRE code is R3922-2.

Compile the documents necessary to send with your application, including the original and five copies of the University of Cambridge application form, a proposal of your study objectives, reference letters on provided forms, transcripts, and a completed medical certificate.

Wait until January to find out if you've been approved by the screening committee, then keep your fingers crossed that in mid-April you will be notified of your acceptance to the University of Cambridge as a Churchill Scholar.

Tips & Warnings

Use a daily planner to coordinate all important aspects of your application.

The International Office coordinates a number of University-wide student exchange programmes, the two principle ones being the Lifelong Learning Programme Erasmus and the Cambridge-MIT Student Exchange. The Cambridge-MIT Student Exchange offers opportunities for second and third year undergraduates of selected subjects to study for one academic year at MIT. Erasmus promotes mobility between European institutions, for staff as well as students.

Opportunities for study in Germany, or for German students to study at Cambridge, exist via the Kurt Hahn Trust. Finally, the International Office also helps administer various scholarship schemes, one of the most popular ones being the Cambridge European Trust Vacation Scholarships, which provide funding for travel within Europe.
