<p>GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Universit Hamburg, Regional Powers Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers.</p>
<p>Fundamental shifts within the global and regional architecture of power are expected in the coming decades. However, the new global and regional configurations of the twenty-first century are currently only partially understood. The newly established HamburgInternational Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers analyzes the emerging power shifts among non-European regions and states, related conflicts with respect to regional leadership within these regions as well as competition for spheres of influence, and the global formation of governance structures among new regional powers and the `old` powers of the OECD world.</p>
<p>Within the school, applications are being invited for 8 Ph.D. scholarships starting 1 April 2010, for a duration of three years. The programme is open to young academics in the fields ofinternational relations /international political economy and comparative area studies. Applicants must have an excellent M.A. or equivalent degree in hand by the time of appointment. We strongly encourage young candidates from abroad to apply.</p>

Scholarships ?s going to be granted upon academic merit and also research capability in order to very well competent overseas graduate students qualified towards commence a higher degree by research in 2012*.</p>
<p>Value: The CIPRS provides:</p>

<li>Course tuition fee for two years for a Master’s (by Research) and a maximum of three and a half years for a Doctoral degree; and</li>

<p>Within the NWO funded project `Articulating Modernity: the Making of Popular Music in 20th Century Southeast Asia and the Rise of New Audiences`.</p>
<p><strong>Application deadline: May 10th, 2010</strong></p>
<p>This is a joint project with the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD). <strong>The project analyzes the interplay between the production of popular music, the articulation of modernity, and the emergence of new audiences, lifestyles and related processes of social differentiation in 20th century (pen)insular Southeast Asia</strong>.<span id="more-281"></span></p>
<p>We focus on decisive historical junctures where technological innovation, human agency, the consumption of new musical styles and the rise of new audiences came together within particular Southeast Asian urban localities. Two senior researchers have been appointed within the project to study the jazz age (1920-1950s) and Islamic popular music in the digital era (1990s-2000s). <strong>There is one PhD position available</strong>.</p>
<p>The PhD project advertised covers the period from the 1950s to 1970s. The regional focus is on Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines. We ask candidates to focus on pioneering artists and producers and to explain their emergence within their particular urban context, the kind of audiences the artists addressed, the new genres they created and how their music was disseminated through live performances, vinyl records, audio cassettes and radio broadcasts.</p>
<p><strong>Candidates are expected to have</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li>A MA , MPhil or MSc degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities with excellent results;</li>
<li>A good command of English (IELTS certificate of qualification 7,5) and proficiency in a Southeast Asian language;</li>
<li>Outstanding research qualities manifest in a high-quality MA thesis or equivalent;</li>
<li>Ability and willingness to carry out empirical research and spend extended periods abroad;</li>
<li>Keen interest in interdisciplinary research methods and approaches (anthropology, history, musicology) and the ability to work in a team.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Terms of employment</strong></p>
<p>A successful applicant will be appointed as promovendus for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities for academic personnel, and will range from 2.042, - per month in the first year, gradually rising to 2.612,- in the final year.</p>

<p>Applications are invited for an MPhil/PhD studentship at the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences, Liverpool John Moores University UK in collaboration with the Children`s Nursing Research Unit. The Children`s Nursing Research Unit (CNRU), based at Alder Hey Children`s NHS Foundation Trust, was established in September 2008. Professor Bernie Carter leads this collaborative venture between Alder Hey and three partner higher education institutions: Liverpool John Moores, Edge Hill and University of Central Lancashire.</p>
<p>Candidates are expected to hold a good Honours (first class or upper second class) or postgraduate degree in a relevant area and able to demonstrate strong research potential. Experience of health service based research, experimental design and statistical analysis of data is desirable. The successful candidate will be based at Liverpool John Moores University and work under the supervision of Lyvonne Tume in collaboration with Professor Fiona Irvine and Professor Bernie Carter (CNRU) along with other clinically based supervisors at the Alder Hey Children`s NHS Foundation Trust.</p>
<p>The position is offered for 3 years (or the possibility of a part-time equivalent) (subject to satisfactory progress and transfer from MPhil to PhD), commencing June 2010. Funding will be provided by LJMU and includes a tax-free stipend of £13,290 and tuition fees payable at the Home/EU level (subject to satisfactory progress). As the studentship will involve working with children, appointment will be subject to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.</p>

The scholarship recipients will each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2010/2011 academic year.<span id="more-220"></span></p>
<p>In June 2010, all scholarship recipients will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for an all-expenses-paid networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity to meet and share experiences.</p>
<p><strong>Eligibility requirements</strong></p>
<p>Candidates must be:</p>
<ul>
<li>A student entering the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent), in 2010/2011.</li>
<li>Enrolled at a University in Europe. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students with disabilities studying at a University in Europe are eligible to apply.</li>
<li>Studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field.</li>
<li>A person with a disability. The term persons with disabilities is used to apply to all persons with disabilities including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.</li>
